Our History

The Current Library 1925

Jens Peter Olsen built the farm in 1915 after parts of the buildings belonging to the original farm in Skamby were destroyed by fire. Lundsgård was constructed on his own land just outside the village and became one of the wealthiest farms in Skamby.

Martha and Jens Peter Olsen clearly had a strong sense of aesthetics, and the garden behind the farm was naturally no exception. The garden was designed in the style of the time, with pathways and flowers. Beyond the garden were the kitchen gardens, located in the very same place they are today.

Thorkild Olsen, 1930-1940

Jens Peter Olsen had four children, three of whom were sons. Thorkild Olsen, the eldest, inherited Lundsgård and managed the farm for another generation.

Lundsgård in the Summer of 1955

This photograph was taken by one of the three farmhands working at Lundsgård in 1955. It shows how the old ornamental garden was gradually being removed, with most of the pathways, flower beds, and other features largely gone.

The Family Gathered at Lundsgård

This photograph was taken on 2 January 1958 and is the last known image of the Olsen family at Lundsgård. In the early 1960s, a new family, the Pedersen family, took over the farm.

Around 1960, Poul and Inge Pedersen took over Lundsgård and ran it as an efficient large-scale farm with more than 400 hectares of land.

Mathias & Jesper

In 2024, after the farm had stood empty for several years, we — Jesper and Mathias Thorsson — took over the property with the aim of transforming the old farm into a cultural gem in North Funen. On the ground floor, we have gradually removed the traces of the 1970s and transformed five rooms into historically styled period interiors that reflect different moments in history.

Lundsgård becomes Thorslundgård

When we moved to Lundsgård with the idea of establishing a visitor destination here, we were aware that there are many farms in Denmark named “Lundsgård.” To avoid confusion, we therefore decided to change the name of the farm to Thorslundgård.
The name was chosen for several reasons. We wanted to preserve part of the farm’s history by keeping “lund” in the name, while also adding a more personal touch. The choice fell on Thorslundgård, incorporating our shared surname, Thorsson.

Mathias Restoring the Windows

We are very careful not to erase the history of the farm and have chosen to preserve rather than replace wherever possible. This also applies to the windows, which are the original ones from 1915. Some even contain inscriptions scratched into the glass by previous owners.

Naturally, these had to be preserved, so one window at a time is carefully sanded, oiled, reglazed, and painted to ensure they endure well into our own time.

The Folk Hall

When you step into the house, the first thing that greets you is our hall furnished in the traditional folk style. The term “folk” referred to ordinary people, and the folk style was the traditional rural style that characterised the homes of the wider population from around 1750 to 1850.

The Chinese Salon

The old common room, where the staff once shared their meals, has been transformed into a Chinese salon inspired by the English Chinoiserie style, which was the height of fashion in 18th-century England.

The Garden Room

Here you see the garden room, the largest room in the house, overlooking the garden, where the old woodchip wallpaper has been replaced with wallpaper inspired by kitchen gardens. The room is dominated by the French Rococo style, featuring Murano glass, Rococo furniture, and an abundance of colour and light.

The Swedish Dining Room

The dining room is furnished in the Swedish Karl Johan and Gustavian styles. Here, we strive to create a Swedish country-house atmosphere with tall wall panelling, Swedish furniture, and historic artworks.

The Library

At Thorslundgård, we have a book collection of approximately 2,000 volumes, some of which are displayed in the library, furnished in the Empire style of the 19th century.

The Secret Room

Behind a false bookcase in the library lies the secret room, decorated in the Pompeian style and filled with antiquities and so-called “Grand Tour” objects.
In the summer of 2025, the room was decorated by artists from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.

An Abundance of Porcelain

Thorslundgård is a collection museum. Here, we house an art and porcelain collection featuring more than 100 different Danish dinner services, historic paintings, and beautiful antiques.

The Garden

Today, Thorslundgård encompasses 2 hectares of land that have been transformed into productive gardens. Here, we have a kitchen garden, an orchard, and a small collection of animals. We also have a small woodland and the old ornamental garden.

The latter had been neglected for many years, but it is now our hope to bring art and flowers back to the old ornamental garden dating from the 1920s.
